The disappearing shade tree mechanic [by joe]

The Playground:: The disappearing shade tree mechanic
I realized this week, after making an unusual repair to one of the family vehicles, that the auto companies seem to be making it harder and/or impossible for us to fix our own "property".
Yes..PROPERTY.
My wife and I own the vehicles parked n the driveway, they are not rentals!
Periodic maintenance is one thing but to have a part fail, stop in at the dealer and have them tell you that a 65 dollar part isn't being made any longer. I said "It is only 12 years old" the parts guy (who is very polite and recognizes me by name) shrugs and says "I don't know what to tell you?". If I can't find this part in a after market location or a junk yard, my very realiable Jeep is going to be a lawn ornament!
That was like getting punched in the stomach.
To my enjoyment, one of the local franchise parts stores was able to find the part in a warehouse somewhere between Burundi and Canada! Hopefully this after market part will give me 175,000 more miles.

Joe
